Cameras A wide range of cameras are considered for the design of a digital imaging system: from a line-scan camera to an area-array camera, from one with high resolution and dynamic range to more modestly priced equipment.
REDLAKE MASD
The Megaplus family of Redlake MASD digital cameras use Kodak sensors; a basic platform for many systems.
BASLER
Lower resolution, inexpensive cameras that fit well into machine vision applications.
DALSA/SMD
High resolution cameras with a high dynamic range.
Computers Computers must be matched to the digital camera and the requirements of the specific application. Systems often require large, removable disk files. Depending on the application, an in-house office/lab unit computer may be used or FSE can provide computer equipment that can also be "ruggedized" for harsh environments. CD ROM writers may be included, as well as external trigger controllers. Windows 95, 98 and NT operating systems are supported, as well as various Unix platforms.
Framegrabbers A number of interfaces and framegrabbers may be used to optimize a system. Some completed systems have included products from:
EDT
A flexible interface capable of running one or more cameras in either monochrome or color mode.
EPIX
A low priced interface board with image processing software.
IMAGING
TECHNOLOGY
A full-featured framegrabber board with on-board memory and on-line image processing power.
Lenses Digital cameras are usually equipped with either a C, F or T Mount. Other catalog lenses (Nikon, Rodenstock, Canon) can be obtained to produce the required result. Special lenses can also be designed for specific applications.
Lights Many applications use off-the-shelf lights, including flourescent, halogen, IR, UV, white and black light. Custom designed diode laser light is available. Strobe light and laser illumination can be synchronized with a camera to capture motion within a fraction of a second.
Printers Not all applications require a hard copy printer. An inexpensive ink jet printer or near photographic quality prints may be sufficient. The optimum price/performance printing device is matched to the specific requirements.
Software Software can include code that will:
  • control a lens
  • monitor the output of lights
  • communicate with and control a camera
  • move and process an image
  • address, tag and store a file
  • display results
  • create necessary reports
